Written Tests

Written tests provide a structured and objective way to measure a candidate’s knowledge of essential topics such as department policies, fireground strategy, leadership principles, and so much more. Written tests do more than test memorization; they assess a candidate’s understanding of key concepts and their abilities to apply knowledge to real-world situations. Written tests ensure consistency across all candidates by evaluating everyone against the same material and scoring criteria. One of the greatest strengths of written testing is its objectivity. This makes written tests highly defensible and widely accepted throughout the fire service.

Apparatus Operator Practical Evaluations are designed to measure real-world performance where it matters most, where the rubber meets the road and on the fireground. These hands-on evaluations go way beyond what a written test can measure for apparatus operators. Our emergency vehicle driving course measures a candidate’s ability to safely operate, position, and manage fire apparatus under realistic conditions; while our pump evaluations focus on a candidate’s ability to properly set up, operate, and manage the pump during emergency operations. Both our emergency vehicle driving course and our pump evaluations are a great way to replicate the decision-making required by the apparatus operator while responding and performing at emergency incidents. These evaluations ensure confidence in your candidate’s ability to perform these roles.

Assessment Centers

Assessment centers are a great way to get another look at potential candidates for promotion. They offer one of the most effective and realistic ways to evaluate a candidate’s readiness to lead. Rather than relying solely on their written exams, assessment centers put candidates in job-related scenarios where they get to actively demonstrate their knowledge, skills, leadership abilities and their judgment. In an assessment center, candidates complete a series of exercises designed to simulate real challenges faced in the positions they are going for. Each exercise is observed and scored by trained, experienced assessors who understand the demands for that position. Assessment centers are a great option to ensure that promotional decisions are based on demonstrated performance—not just written test scores.
